First Year in Review

One year ago today, H and I closed on our first home, where has the time gone?! And we have completed a number of projects, though there are still many many, many left to do. Being a homeowner is a never ending task but I thought that if I make a list of all the things we have completed this year, not only will I feel very accomplish (I hope) but it will motivate me to continue to make this house our very own. So here goes, in no particular order:

  1. Put up blinds in the the entire house (except the breakfast nook).
  2. Mounted the new flatscreen above the fireplace. I actually think that was done the very day we moved in. H has his priorities straight : )
  3. Oh, and he put up surround sound in the family room, again priorities haha
  4. Bought a front loader washer and drier, and installed them ourselves. Well, H did that on Halloween last year and while all the little kiddies came to the door for candy, he was cursing and yelling upstairs trying to hook up the dryer which was way more involved than we both expected. Made for a very interesting Halloween.
  5. Purchased a dining room table and chairs which we both love. We actually switched out the chairs that came with the table for more modern looking chairs from a different set, you would never know the difference! More on that here.
  6. Started and (more or less) finished our "butler's pantry" area! This was a big undertaking and very rewarding! Check out the project here.
  7. Purchased a new stainless steel refrigerator. Complete with ice maker and water dispenser! See the photos of the kitchen on the House Tour Page.
  8. Painted and decorated the dining room, though it still needs some artwork or something. See it here!
  9. Finally bought an adult bedroom set. It took some convincing to get a king size mattress but it was sooooo worth it! The furniture really makes the room feel so much more mature : )
  10. Painted and decorated the master bedroom.
  11. Got part of the garage organized, though it has a long way to go, at least there are some shelves up and room for storage now.
  12. Painted, stenciled, and decorated the wash closet in the master bath. For being so small, it sure was a challenge!
  13. Put in a custom (well custom looking) closet organizer that is amazing. Check it out here.
  14. We also installed two garage door openers which were H's parents' wedding gift to us. My FIL even helped install them over Thanksgiving weekend. A big thank you to them!
  15. Started painting the kitchen! Yay! Ok, so I know I haven't posted on that yet, but we are mid painting so check back later for that update. Very exciting!
I'd say that's a lot of accomplishments in one year! Not to mention getting a puppy, saving for and then going on our dream honeymoon! I am impressed with all that we have done, and I am so looking forward to the coming years, checking things off the to do list one project at a time!

CSA Part 2

It has been a while since I posted about the CSA program H and I are a part of so I figured I would show what we got this week. We are starting to get into fall crops so the root vegetables are coming up which makes me a very happy girl. And we are getting lettuce again which means more salads for lunch (I don't know if that's a good or bad thing). And I can't wait until we get sweet potatoes, those are my favorite! But, until then, I will make due with all the other delicious veges we got this week!

Ok here's the breakdown:

- 1 huge head of cauliflower
- 1 eggplant
- 12 assorted hot peppers
- 2 bell peppers
- 1 bunch of turnips
- 2 daikon turnips
- 1 bunch of carts (that look like they are on steroids!)
- 1 lb heirloom tomatoes
- 4 lbs slicing or beefsteak tomatoes
- 1/2 lb of spinach
- 1 lb of arugula
- 4, yes 4, heads of lettuce

No clue what I am going to do with 4 heads of lettuce, but I'm sure I will figure something out. And looking at those carrots and the cauliflower, whoever said organic means small never went to this farm!  It's a really good feeling to know that we are helping out a local farm, even better that it comes with the perk of all this amazing produce!

Happy Picking!

Broccoli Leek Soup

This soup (from Williams Sonoma's Soup of the Day) is so flavorful and if you love broccoli as much as I do you will love it! It is so easy to make and requires very few ingredients which is definitely a bonus. You could always change it up too and add some sharp cheddar cheese on top and pop it in the broiler.. mmm.

Ingredients:

- 2 tbs olive oil
- 2 leeks (white and pale green parts) finely chopped
- 1 1/2 lbs broccoli (I just so happened to have 4 heads from the CSA, so that's what I used) florets and peeled stems cut into 1 inch pieces
- 4 cups chicken broth (or you could use vege to make it vegetarian!)
- Salt and Pepper
- Sour cream for garnish
- Chives (optional - I didn't have any so I didn't use it)
- Garlic croutons (optional - You can either buy them or make your own)

Directions:

- Warm oil over medium heat
- Add leeks and saute until softened (3-5 min)
- Add broccoli and saute until slightly softened (2 min)

- Add broth and bring to a simmer
- Cover partially and cook until veges are tender (15-20 min)

- Remove from heat and let cool slightly
- Working in batches puree soup until smooth (or use your immersion blender!)
- Season with salt and pepper, garnish and serve!

Enjoy!

Dining Room

I haven't posted about our dining room yet, and since it is the closest room to being finished, I figured I would go into more detail about what we did and what we still want to do.

As you know, H and I came from a small apartment in NYC which was not big enough for a dining room set. We actually got this folding/slide out table from IKEA which worked really well for us. Fit perfectly in the small space as a 4 top but could extend to seat up to 6 people. Great for game nights. : ) We also purchased 4 white chairs from Target (similar) that were super cheap and very thin. They easily fit flush under the table giving us way more room to move around the space. However, when we moved into the new house we put that same table in our dining room and just started laughing! The table was soooooo small in comparison to the large room, it just looked sad. We knew we would have to get an "adult" dining room set at some point but it quickly moved up to the sooner rather than later list. So we kept our eyes out wherever we went.

The tough part about having a contemporary/transitional style (yes transitional is a style - a cross between contemporary and traditional) is that everything is a clean line. Now, don't get me wrong, I live for clean lines. There's something about that crisp, elegant look that makes me smile. But when it comes to furniture, it can sometimes also mean boring. All the "contemporary" dining room tables we were finding looked like office furniture, very plain-jane, no character, nothing. I wanted something with a little bit of style and uniqueness, but nothing too over the top. Of course, it always happens that what I am looking for just so happens to be hard to find (or expensive).

Well after going to literally every furniture store in the area, we finally found a table that we agreed upon at Ashley Furniture. It was a dark espresso color with some detailing on the top where the wood grain meets at the center and it had very nice legs - yep, my table has nice legs : ) The only problem was that the chairs that went with the table were just - ok. My original thought was to find chairs somewhere else down the road but after searching everywhere for a table, I was just tired of looking, and H was tired of me saying, "It's really nice, but..." So we looked around the show room and sure enough we were able to find a chair style that we liked from a different set, pulled a few over to the table and they worked! If you look very close you can see there is a slight difference in the wood color/stain but who is really gonna look that closely?

Here you can see a little bit of the detail on the legs : )

We also found our "adult" bedroom set that day, but that is another story for another post. There is a buffet style table in the dining room too that was from H's Great Aunt who passed about a year ago now. I wish I would have had more time to get to know her, but she seemed like a wonderful woman. She did a lot of traveling and collected paintings and furniture from her journeys. This table is such a unique item with a slate top and iron detailing, it really is a great piece of furniture. We just have to find the right place for it. For now, it works great here in the dining room with a few personal touches.

We painted this room using Anonymous by Behr. A great blue/grey color that really pops against the chair rail and crown molding. We also used this color to paint the inside wall of the coffered ceiling to give the room some added height. Now, disregard the curtains, they are way too short but I just love the sheer pattern. I am hoping to move these upstairs when we find something that works for this space. Or maybe we can just find two benches that can go under each window so it is not so noticeable.

Another item on our "to purchase" list is a new light fixture. Something more modern with a bit of bling : ) Maybe like this or this? And of course artwork or photos for the walls other than the one mirror, but that will all come in time. The mirror was a great HomeGoods find though, only $40!

So here is what our to do list looks like for this room:

- Paint top half of chair rail and ceiling
- Purchase table and chairs
- Buy new light fixture
- Find a great rug to make the space feel cozy
- Buy two fabric end chairs
- Buy and hang a large mirror on the back wall
- Add artwork/wall decor
- Install wainscoting on the bottom half of walls
- Purchase and install window hardware
- Hang window treatments <- we just need to find longer ones

Not too bad. And for now, this room is done until we find those details that we love (and of course at a good price). I know this is a room we don't use that often, but it is what you see first when you walk into the house so having this space more or less finished helps makes a good first impression. Plus, now we have a great space for the upcoming holidays to host family dinners. You guys know how I love to cook : )

Check back for updates!

Potato Leek Puree with Smoked Salmon & Dill

Here is another recipe that I have made from the Williams Sonoma Soup of the Day cook book that I absolutely love. I think it would be a great recipe for a dinner party, very light and refreshing, perfect for a first course that is sure to wow! It is also easy to make. You could even make this recipe ahead of time. Just reheat when needed, garnish, and serve!

Ingredients:

- 2 tbs olive oil
- 2 leeks, white and pale green parts, chopped
- 2 russet potatoes, peeled and finely chopped (I used whatever potato type I had on hand)
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tbs chopped dill
- 1/4 lb smoked salmon, chopped
- Salt and pepper

Directions:

- In a large pot saute leeks in oil until soft (5 min)
- Add potatoes and broth, bring to a boil
- Reduce heat to low and simmer until potatoes are very soft (~ 20 min)
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly
- Working in batches, puree soup in a blender
(or use your immersion blender like I did here!)
- Return soup to pot and stir in cream and dill
- Season with salt and pepper to taste
- Garnish with smoked salmon and a sprig or two of dill

Note: to impress your guests, serve soup in a shallow bowl so the salmon doesn't sink to the bottom

Enjoy!
